EBay Ends All Digital Sales

25 March 2008

EBay has announced that ebooks can no longer be listed as an auction or Buy It Now beginning March 31, 2008.  That means that ebooks can no longer be bought and sold on eBay.  The Classifed Ad is still an option for ebook sellers, but it does not allow buyers to download ebooks through the eBay system.

Ebooks have been a thriving business on eBay for years, and they even provided a digital download system to give sellers a way to offer instant delivery to buyers.    Now the only option for ebook sellers will be to purchase classified ads on eBay.

The latest change affects not only ebooks, but any product that is delivered digitally.

This new decision by eBay will force many sellers to change the way they do business.  Some say it is a good thing because ebook sales have been perceived as scams by some buyers who do not understand what an ebook is, and thus they sometimes make a purchase thinking it is for a physical item that will be shipped.  Then they are unhappy when they find they purchased a digital item and not a physical item.

Classified ads have been found to work well for some sellers, and this is an option more sellers will be pursuing.  Former ebook sellers can also sell their digital items as a physical product on CD.  Still, the former instant digital download provided by eBay will be missed by many sellers and buyers alike.
